By road

One of Australia’s great coastal drives.

Driving the east coast is a wonderful way to experience real Australian life. Sweeping surf beaches, secluded bays and quintessential coastal towns stretch the entire way, and there’s no shortage of reasons to pull over and explore. The drive from Sydney takes around eight and a half hours and is best broken with an overnight stop. From Brisbane it’s a quick hour and a half south, though the Gold Coast beaches make it well worth slowing down along the way.

Australia drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right side of the car. If you’re an international visitor, find out more about driving in Australia with an overseas licence.

Once you arrive, Byron Bay’s compact town centre is easy to explore on foot. For trips further afield, local buses, taxis and hire cars are all available, and having your own car gives you the freedom to discover the beautiful surrounding region at your own pace.
